Soai Kinh Lam fabric market
Context
Soái Kình Lâm Market presents a quiet departure from the typical, bustling Saigon marketplace. Though the fabrics and sellers remain, the historic space now carries an overarching sense of solitude that deepens as you move upward into the residential apartment layers where the vendors reside. This project translates that atmospheric shift into four typographic posters, capturing the contrast between the market's commercial structure and its fading, contemplative reality.
Vải Vóc Chất Đống (Piles of Textiles)
Stepping into the fabric market reveals a world dense with
color and pattern. Piles of textiles stack and overlap,
creating a visually rich environment where each bolt of
fabric adds a new layer to an overwhelming sensory experience.
Xa Mặt Cách Lòng (Out of Sight, Out of Mind)
Spatial structure dictates social behavior within the market.
While the overlapping, interior booths foster a tight-knit
community where vendors constantly interact, the street-facing
stalls are clearly separated, encouraging a more independent approach to selling.
Xa Đông Gần Vắng (Busy from Afar, Empty Close Up)
While its central location in District 5 maintains the external
illusion of a bustling hub, the market’s interior tells a different
story, having faced a steep decline in foot traffic. Stepping inside
reveals a starkly quiet reality where vendors now outnumber buyers.
This shift replaces the historical chaos of commerce with a deep, solitary atmosphere.
Gác Vắng (Silence Above)
The upper floors of the market consist of apartments where the vendors'
families reside. With everyone working downstairs during the day,
the residential area transitions into a quiet, deserted world.
This poster captures that sense of isolation, a solitude made even
more pronounced by the marketplace directly beneath it.
This shift replaces the historical chaos of commerce with a deep, solitary atmosphere.
